STATUS of THE OTHER MIDDLE EASTERN EXPERIMENT in SELF GOVERNMENT - January 5, 2006

In the past year, Lebanon has undergone a major transformation of the basic operating assumptions, which have underpinned the establishment of order in the country.  However, this transformation is not yet complete. Much work remains to be done to completely undo the Iranian-Syrian infrastructure left behind in Lebanon.

Significant Progress

The change has nevertheless been significant. As of April 27, 2005, the Syrian Occupation Army and intelligence officers have evacuated Lebanon and Rustom Ghazali no longer operates Lebanon from Anjar.  Syrian tanks no longer sit on the ridges overlooking Beirut nor in the central mountain ranges straddling the country.  There are no Syrian Army checkpoints along the roads.

Lebanon's Population

Lebanon's population and the numerical ratios of the various sects and religions have acquired mythological dimensions as they get manipulated and modified to suit political agendas.

NALA has never believed that the exact numbers are material to the inalienable rights of any Lebanese individual or group. Human and civil rights should be equally afforded to all citizens regardless of whether they belong to the largest or smallest community.

In recent years the Lebanese Government in line with the rest of the Arab world has taken it upon itself to systematically reduce the official number of Christians in the country to justify the lopsided policy of marginalization. Officials continually assert that the Christians who make up no more than 25-30% of the population should be grateful that they still have the rights they do.
